Are you an over achiever, someone who has a finger in many projects? Someone whose hand is the first to go up when volunteers are needed? Do you find yourself running through your home instead of taking time to relax and enjoy it? When people talk about new T.V. shows or movies, or even old ones do you stare at them blankly? Is your life so full of activity that you rarely have a moment for yourself, or time for a good meal or a good workout? These are classic signs of over involvement of a person with high energy and poor focus.

Now don’t get me wrong, achieving much and being very involved with life is not a bad thing, unless your life controls you and not the other way around. Many people think that the bulk of my client load consists of under-achieving slackers who need a kick in the proverbial pants to get out of bed each morning. Not so, most of my clients are highly successful people, who have stopped achieving because they lack focus. Activity will do that to you, or at least too much of it. Activity does not always equal success.

If you don’t have a handle on why you do the things you do each day, and you are starting to feel like your life is a whirling dervish of activity with no particular rhyme or reason, it may be time to re-evaluate. Stop and take a look at what is important to you, look at your values and narrow your focus slightly to those things that have meaning in your life. Stop doing things just because you are asked to, and do the things that fit into your values.

Understanding your values is one important step in determining how to spend your time each day. Focus can give your activities far more impact and make your life in general much more purpose-driven.

So slow down, and take a few moments to think about what you really value, what gives your life meaning, and chances are these are the areas that you should concentrate all that excess energy into. Enjoy the day!
