I was reminded this weekend of just how powerful the pursuit of a passion can be in the life of an individual. Sunday marked the opening of the Model A Restoration Conference held this year in Dallas, TX. Model A clubs come together every year for a giant conference and this year, to my husband’s delight, it is in Dallas. My husband and I drove down to check things out and determine the best days for him to visit. We were both amazed and impressed as we walked through one of the storage garages and viewed all the cars, some restored to original, including original paint color specifications, and others restored and modified to suit the taste of the owner. All were impressive as we considered the time and effort put into each car.
Even more impressive were the number of enthusiasts who had come from around the country and even as far as Canada. Some of them had actually driven their vehicles, while others, likely those to be judged, chose to bring them in a trailer. There are swap meets for parts, seminars and judging of vehicles all week long. There is even a fashion show for period clothing. These people are serious about their hobby.
This happy group of Model A enthusiasts get together each year to enjoy a passion they all share. They come from clubs from around North America, and they share a common desire to keep the past alive through these wonderful old cars. I can tell you the these cars don’t just “come together”. Each car represents many hours of work and lots of money before it sits in the garage to be admired. It takes someone truly dedicated to their passionate pursuit to bring a finished product to this event.
So what are you passionate about? Is there something that you have longed to do that you just haven’t been willing to commit the effort to pursuing? Maybe you want to get that degree, write a book, start a business or restore a car. All big accomplishments take commitment, time and sometimes money, but they are always worth the investment. Most of these gentlemen have restored more than one Model A, and all of them wanted to do more. They love to talk about their cars to anyone who will listen and they recognize the value of a passion and how it can propel one toward accomplishment. So what would you pursue if there were no obstacles? Start planning and one day it will become a reality.
